Norman Avenue has a fabric crush

Sri brings antique Japanese textiles to Cibone O’Te on Saturday afternoon, as Commune Shop’s temporary Greenpoint visit reaches its final weekend.

By The Edit: North Brooklyn · Sept. 26, 2026

Cibone O’Te lists a Sri textile trunk show for Saturday, Sept. 26, from 2 to 6 p.m. at 50 Norman Ave. in Greenpoint. It is part of Commune Shop’s temporary residency, scheduled through Sept. 27. Think antique Japanese cloth and a specific afternoon window, not another store opening.

Sri specializes in Japanese folk textiles, including indigo cotton and patched boro pieces. The host’s announcement also describes cloth made from hemp, ramie and other plant fibers. If your saved interiors folder has become one long study in texture, this is a more concrete way to spend an hour with the subject.

Go with questions. How was a piece used? Which repairs belong to its working life? What should someone know before displaying it at home? Those are our suggested conversation starters, not promises about the inventory or who will be available to answer. Ask before touching, and let the seller explain how a delicate piece should be handled.

The wider Commune Shop presentation began Sept. 18 and ends Sunday. Cibone’s announcement lists merchandise including caps, totes and bandanas alongside the special events. Today’s Sri session has its own 2 to 6 p.m. window; the shop’s posted general hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. are not the event hours.

Make this an indoor stop with a purpose. You do not need a new apartment, a full renovation or a declaration that you collect textiles. Looking closely and learning what you like is a perfectly good afternoon. Check the host’s announcement before traveling, particularly with outdoor markets canceling plans this weekend.
