Detroit’s Eugenie gives Wythe Avenue a 12 day wardrobe detour

A temporary Kinspace outpost brings independent labels, original art and a Detroit point of view to Williamsburg.

Eugenie’s Williamsburg outpost runs Oct. 15 through 26 at Kinspace, 135 Wythe Ave. The Detroit boutique is bringing apparel, accessories and fine jewelry for a temporary 12 day stay. Its location page lists hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The appeal of a visiting boutique is the chance to encounter someone else’s edit in person. Eugenie names Rachel Comey, Cordera, Lauren Manoogian, Nikki Chasin, Proche and BRUCE among the labels selected for New York. Treat that list as a starting point for browsing, rather than a guarantee that a particular piece or size will be waiting.

The campaign photograph accompanying the announcement is an especially good invitation to look at fabric. A rust colored velvet dress catches the light against brick; the surface does more work than any stack of styling accessories could. For a shopping visit, that is a useful prompt: handle the material, look at the garment in ordinary light and decide where it belongs in the wardrobe you already have.

There is more than clothing on the announcement. Eugenie plans original work by Maxine McCrann, a print publication about Detroit designers and a food component from Molly Mitchell of Rose’s Fine Food. The event page does not give individual activation times, so check the boutique’s updates before making a separate trip for one of those elements.

Give the shop its own stretch of the afternoon. A short run can make everything feel urgent, but a closing date is not a reason to buy something that fails the ordinary Tuesday test. The better souvenir is the piece you can already imagine wearing home.
